Our Douglas County, Wisconsin Highpointing Page

2 areas: 1369 feet, 1360+ feet

Introduction

Douglas County's 2 high point areas area located in Sections 17 and 21 of Summit Township. Following the accounts of previous visitors to these two areas, I only visited the 1369 foot area shortly before sunset on May 29, 2005, after completing Saint Louis County, Minnesota.

Approaches to the Southern Douglas County High Point

From Superior, I drove south in State Highway 35 for about 22 miles, and turned left onto Tower Fire Lane.
I drove east on Tower Fire Lane for 2.25 miles, when I realized that I had overshot the tower access road.
I turned around there and drove 0.4 mile, once again passing the road I needed and turned left onto a logging road.
I followed that road for 0.45 mile and turned around. I got back to Tower Fire Lane, and parked by the tower access road at 0.55 mile.
The actual distance from S.H. 35 is 2.15 miles, or 2.9 miles west of County Road A.

The Trail

I parked 0.21 mile from the top. The gate was destroyed. I walked up the road, but I could have driven it in my Ford Escort. The mosquitoes were thick, it being dusk.

The Summit

I arrived at the summit in 7 minutes. I walked around the summit hill on a path that encircled it, it being blocked in 1 place by a fallen tree.

The summit tower is gone.

The Climb Down

I walked back to my car using the same route, 13 minutes round trip.

The Route Out

I continued east on Tower Fire Lane for 2.9 miles to C.R. A and drove straight on that road on my way to Bayfield County.
