Our Wadena County, Minnesota Highpointing Page

3 unnamed hills: 1520+ feet

Introduction

I visited Wadena's three high point hills on November 26, 2004, after completing Otter Tail County. These three hills are in Section 6 of Red Eye Township.

My Approach to the Southwestern Wadena County High Point

I drove north out of Wadena on U.S. 71 for 20.34 miles to Wadena County Road 158 (I missed the turn for C.R. 146 the mile before), and drove west for 3 miles to the Becker-Otter Tail-Wadena County Tri-point, and then turned south along the Otter Tail-Wadena County line (625th Avenue) for about 0.9 mile,

The Southwestern High Point

The first area is large and fairly flat for a Minnesota high point. It was in a field of young trees, planted in rows--about 100 rows. It is surrounded by good, strong, relatively new barbed wire fences. I crossed the first one, then walked up and down the highest rows until I was satisfied that I had summited the first area. 3 minutes to do this.

The Hike to the Middle High Point

I then started walking straight toward the middle high point, crossing first one barbed wire fence, then another (both diagonally). I probably could have avoided both by walking around the outside of them, first north, then east at the wooded area just northeast of the first area. Then I walked pretty much straight north along the eastern side of the fence marking the eastern edge of the young trees land. I then walked through the wooded area which covered part of the middle area, on my way to the middle summit, a 19-minute journey.

The Middle High Point

Like the first area, this one was fairly flat. I felt that the highest ground was near a huge pile of trees that had been bucked down in that area, and continued walking until all the high ground was covered.

The Hike to the Northeastern High Point

From there it was a short walk to the mitten-shaped third area. The large, open area between these two areas had elevated deer stands, allowing for easy targeting, though they were unoccupied at that time. The time for this portion of the hike was 6 minutes.

The Northeastern High Point

This area is mostly flat, so it just took a lot of walking. High ground is in the open area--the woods area is lower.

The Return Hike

I walked through the hunting area, essentially straight west, with some southwest vectors back to the road, through the barbed-wire fences, back onto the road, and back to my truck, a total of 19 minutes.

The Route Out

I went 2.9 miles north from my parking spot to a left turn onto S.H. 87, which led me into Becker County, my next stop.
