Our Todd County, Minnesota Highpointing Page

2 areas on Mount Nebo: 1510+ feet

Introduction

Todd County's Highest Point, Mount Nebo, is one of the few named Minnesota County High Points. It is less than a half-mile from U.S. 71, one of the most conveniently placed high points in the state. I ascended Mount Nebo on September 25, 2004, after completing Morrison County.

Approaches to Mount Nebo

While I was working my way up and down toward the top, I noticed vehicle tracks coming from the northwest, probably from the farmplace. My approach, however, was to park in the approach by the fenceline, walk along the fenceline, then cross the fence and hike cross-country to the top.

Parking

I parked in the approach. Mount Nebo's tower is visible in the background, left side.

The Trail

The initial part of the trail is a faint vehicle road, which paralleled a fence until it neared a wooded area, then both fence and road turned left. The cross reported by Michael Schwartz appears to be the remains of a telephone pole, and is about 50 feet into the hike.

After the field road turned to the north, I looked for a convenient place to hop over the fence, for the straightest walk up. It did, however, involve a loss and regain of elevation, through a saddle.

At the base of the mountain, a gate blocked the road. It was too high for me to step over or through, so I went under.

From there, it was a fairly steep (for Minnesota topography) and steady climb to the tower area.

The Summit Pair

The Geological marker (NAYLOR) is just south of the fenced area, and the apparent high ground in that contour:

I did not see a registration book, so I continued on toward the second 1510' contour, bushwhacking through moderate woods. It's hard to see in this photo, but there is a circular mini-depression on the top of the second summit

The View from the Top

This is the best summit view of any Minnesota County I have yet climbed (except Cook). It has a great vista to the west:

The Climb Down

I returned essentially the way I came, through the saddle and back to my truck. The total time out of my truck was 34 minutes.

The Route Out

After Todd, I proceeded to my third county of the day, Stearns. I took U.S. 71 south to I-94 east.
