Our Stevens County, Minnesota Highpointing Page

3 unnamed field hills: 1270+ feet

Introduction

Stevens County's three high points are located in Sections 9 and 10 of Swan Lake Township, within a mile of the Grant County Line. I visited there on November 26, 2004 (the day after Thanksgiving), after completing Pope County.

Approaches to the Stevens County High Point Area

I came from the east. I took backroads from Kensington. From Kensington, I drove south on Douglas County Road 1 (became Pope C.R. 3 after 1.28 miles), then right on 110th Street (gravel) after continuing 1 mile into Pope County. I continued for 6 miles on 110th Street into Stevens County, then right (north) on 430th Avenue for 1/4 mile, then left (west) on 110th Street for 1.1 miles to the bottom of the swale, near the property line 1/4 mile west of the driveway.

Parking

I parked on the roadside there.

The Trail

I started walking along the property line to the high point on the line, and followed the summit ridge through the contour of the largest high point area.

Area 1

I arrived at the top of Area 1 in 7 minutes and proceeded on to area 2.

Area 2

Area 2 is tiny comparable to area 1, and I merely walked through it on my way to area 3.

Area 3

Area 3 was fairly flat, the high point being either in the field of scrub grass or by the large hay bales on the ridge road.

I returned to the property line via the road (not pictured on the topo map).

The Route Out

I was curious about what markers, if any, were at the quad-point--the junction of Grant, Douglas, Stevens, and Pope counties, but there wasn't anything noting the unusual position.

From the quad-point, I returned one mile west, turning right onto Grant C.R. 5. I followed that paved road (became gravel at the intersection with C.R. 2), almost all the way to Grant County High Point.
