The location of Sherburne County's High Point is somewhat surprising to me. It is near the Mississippi River, not at the opposite end of the county like most river-bordered counties are.
I summitted Sherburne County on September 4, 2004. I set out to bag four counties that day, and succeeded--the most so far in one day for me.
I came from my home in Anoka County, driving northwest on U.S. Highway 10, turning left on Minnesota State Highway 301, which goes just south of the prison. I followed S.H. 301 for 0.6 miles, where I turned left onto a gravel road into the correctional facility through an open gate.
I then followed the road as it curved left south of the high point area. I turned around when I saw that there was no easy trail access to the top from that side.
I parked next to the S.O.R.T confidence course, across the road from this large playground:
The trailhead, as such, is a sign marking the confidence course route (formerly known as obstacle course), not a highpoint route trail.
There is a mowed path on both sides of the course sign, initially wide enough for vehicle traffic, then is blocked by the confidence-building structures. I started on the trail just to the left of the sign, and walked along the mowed path and past the obstacles.
The USGS topographical map shows a small 1110 contour line, and it seems well represented by the small bump next to this event:
There is no Geological marker nor registration book.
I just walked the same route back to my truck.
I turned right out of the correctional facility back onto S.H. 301. I turned left onto U.S. 10, continuing my route toward the Benton County High Point.
