Pope County's six highpoints are located in Section 5 of Leven Township, near the border with Douglas County. I visited them on November 26, 2004, the first of a two-day, 12-county tour of west-central Minnesota. I used Bob Packard's numbering system, from north to south.
I took I-94 north-west-west of the Twin Cities for 130 miles to the Minnesota State Highway 29 exit, going south. I went 1.25 miles south, then turned left onto Douglas County Road 87, which curved south into the small community of Forada. I got lost in that town, but got back on track, crossing a railroad track and continuing south on C.R. 87. It turned to gravel shortly after that. C.R. 87 curved right, crossing the RR tracks again.
I parked on the roadside about 1/3 mile south of the Douglas-Pope County Road.
Area 1 is less than 100 yards from the road, and just past the railroad tracks. It was a quick trip, just 4 minutes.
I continued on the road south, just past the curve (1/4 mile past area 1's parking spot), to pick up area 2, the one on Mr. Mrnak's property. The field was plowed. It was before sunrise, so I just walked the short distance to the hill and back--5 minutes round trip.
I continued on the road west for another 1/4 mile, where I parked in an approach a little past the nearest point to area 3. Another plowed field. I arrived at area 3 in 4 minutes, and continued on to area 4.
Area 4 was 5 minutes away from area 3 and appeared higher than both areas 3 and 5, and is my nominee for highest of the 3 close areas.
I continued on to area 5, arriving in 4 minutes. From there it also looked like area 4 was higher.
I returned to my truck, a total of 20 minutes.
I continued west another 1/4 mile to 210th Avenue, where I turned left. It merged with paved Pope C.R. 30, which itself curved to the left 1/2 mile south. I parked on the roadside a little short of area 6, wanting to avoid the farmplace nearby. That was a quick 4-minute trip.
I turned around from my last parking spot, and continued west on C.R. 30, turning left on S.H. 29, for 2.55 miles, then west on C.R. 28 (paved), then, at 6.64 miles, turning right onto S.H. 55. I kept going west on 55 to Douglas C.R. 1, turned left there, then, after 2.3 miles, turned right onto 110th street (gravel road), for 6 miles, then right onto 430th Aveune for 1/4 mile, going toward the Stevens County High Point area.
