Our Pipestone County, Minnesota Highpointing Page

2 unnamed field hills: 1990+ feet

Introduction

The Pipestone County High Points are located near the northern edge of the county, in sections 1 and 2 of Fountain Prairie Township. I visited there on November 14, 2004, just after completing Lyon County.

Approaches to Pipestone County's High Points

From Ruthton, I drove west on Pipestone County Road 11 (paved for over 4 miles, then gravel after junction with C.R. 16), for5 miles, then 0.8 mile north on 130th Avenue to the locked FAA building.

The Eastern High Point

Parking

I parked in the FAA parking lot, thinking that they owned the high point, then looked around, and realized that the FAA did not own the land.

The Trail

I simply stepped over the fence at the blue sign 2376

and walked to the HP area. It was a field of harvested corn. I walked on the HP ridge. Once there, I looked toward the southeast and noticed that the hill east of the grove looked about as high. I went there, and was not sure which area was higher. There shouldn't be any question since there is a 10 foot difference in elevation.

The Summit

In any event, I took 14 minutes to complete the first HP area.

The Route Between High Points

I continued north on 130th Avenue to the Lincoln county line, then drove west for 241st Street for 0.3 miles to the western high point area.

The Western High Point

Parking

I parked on the Lincoln side of the road at the road crest.

The Trail

I walked up to the HP and back in 9 minutes. It was a typical plowed corn field with a bitter cold wind.

The Summit

I continued past the middle of the small contour area to the south to another bump. It looked like it might have been high, but was lower than the 1990' area.

The Route Out

I was eager to move on to Lincoln County, so I turned around, and went north on C.R. 16 (paved) back to U.S. 14.
