Our Martin County, Minnesota Highpointing Page

2 unnamed field hills: 1410+ feet

Introduction

Martin County's two candidate high point areas are near each other in fields, near the Jackson county line. In fact, one of the areas spans the county line. Section 31 of Lake Fremont Township. I visited these areas on November 13, 2004, after the long trip from Faribault County's High Point.

Approaches to the Martin County High Point Areas

I took I-90 West, then exit 87 (Minnesota State Highway 4) at Sherburn. I went south on S.H. 4 for 11.5 miles to a gravel road where County Road 6 goes east. I turned right (west) for 2.85 miles, then turned left onto 20th Avenue for one mile, then right onto 20th street for one mile, then left onto 10th Avenue (the Jackson-Martin county line road). I drove south on 10th Ave for 1/2 mile, where I parked on the roadside opposite the northern HP area.

The northern HP Area

The northern area is the one that spreads across the county line. The topographical map shows a wooded area and several buildings nearby, but the woods are gone as are most of the buildings. The field containing the high area was plowed. I arrived at the highest point in 3 minutes, with 2 more minutes to descend. I could see the southern area about 1/4 mile away, and that it looked lower than the northern.

I got back into my truck and continued south on the county line road for 1/4 mile and parked in an approach near the southern area.

The Southern HP area

I toured the southern area, but I could see that it was not as high as the northern one. There was no visible pipeline, as shown on the topo map. Round trip time 5 minutes.

The Route Out

I continued south along the Jackson-Martin county line to where it intersected with Emmet County, Iowa.
