Our Lac Qui Parle County, Minnesota Highpointing Page

1 unnamed area: 1410+ feet

Introduction

Lac Qui Parle county's High Point is in section 31 of Manfred Township, where the ground slopes down from South Dakota. I visited there on November 13, 2004, just after completing Yellow Medicine County.

My Approach to the Lac Qui Parle High Point

Where Yellow Medicine County Road 15 reaches the northern end of that county, I turned left for 1.5 miles along the Lac Qui Parle-Yellow Medicine county line road, which brought me to the tripoint with Deuel County, South Dakota. I drove north for 0.2 miles to a point nearest where I expected the bench mark to be, on the road crest, near the driveway for house number 1014.

and began looking inside the wood line for the bench mark. I didn't find it, but walked the entire length of the wood line until I was satisfied that I had found the highest point in the county. When I was satisfied that I had covered it, an older man drove up, asking my intentions. I told him, and he remembered having seen a 2-foot square gold placque, level with the ground just at the wood line by the driveway, as recently as five years ago. We both scoured the area looking for it, but the area was covered with grass, not likely to be harboring anything that large underneath it.

The Climb Down

He eventually gave up looking and drove away, as did I.

The Route Out

This was my last intended county of the day and it was just before 1:00 PM. I had not programmed any other coordinates into my GPS, but decided to use the daylight as well as I could, now almost 4 driving hours from home. I headed toward Big Stone County, in an effort to claim another first ascent there.
