I visited this county's high point on March 14, 2005. It was my third completion of the day, after finishing Houston County.
At the state line, Minnesota State Highway 76 continues south keeping its number. I stayed on Iowa S.H. 76 to County Road A44 just north of Waukon. I drove east on A44 for about 1.3 miles to S.H. 9. The sign mentioned by Ron Tagliapietra, who came from the south, is just south of the intersection on the east side of the road. I saw that sign, but did not read it. I could have saved myself some trouble if I had parked here instead of where I did.
I continued south on C.R. 9 for about 0.3 miles (a total of 2.1 miles since I turned onto C.R. A44), and parked at a service road, blue post number 2801.
I walked up this road, then on the grass to the barbed wire fence. I walked along the fence line, looking for high ground. I eventually jumped over the fence and walked around the large contour area.
I could not tell if the ground along the fence line or a spot southeast of the radio tower was highest.
On the way back over the fence, I tore my pants on a barb and had to live with that for the rest of the day.
I got back to my car and drove north on S.H. 9. It was then that I found the sign, on the fence next to a drive in closed gate.
I continued northeast on S.H. 9 toward Wisconsin. I crossed this bridge over the Mississippi River at Lansing:
Then, it was on to Crawford County, Wisconsin.
