Red Hill, the highest peak in its area, in an around Haleakala National Park, is located at 20° 42' 48"N, 156° 15' 27"W. I climbed it with my children, Matthew and Faith on May 31, 2004. Tammy and Mark II stayed in our rental vehicle. At just over 10,000 feet, it was a test for our reactions to the high altitude that we would encounter two days later on Mauna Kea. None of us showed any reaction to this altitude.
There is a fairly large parking lot just below the summit, enough space for 50 or so cars.
If you can call it a trail head, this is the staircase that leads to the summit and the summit building
The trail is a staircase that leads from the parking lot to the summit
An observation building sits right next to the summit. There are great views in all directions.
I wasn't looking for the Geological marker, so I didn't see it.
Nearby are a few slightly lesser peaks like Magnetic Peak, just to the southeast of Red Hill, and Kolekole, just to the southwest.
We walked down the same staircase back to the car.
On the way down, we passed Pakaoao (White Hill), a hill over 200 feet lower than Red Hill. I stopped there because Adam Helman recommeded it in his trip report. I enjoyed the view from White Hill even better than that from Red Hill. Despite the foggy condition, it did offer a better view of the crater. I did see and photograph the Bench Mark at this place.
From here we continued our tour of Maui, enjoying a luau at the Old Lahaina Luau.
